- From looking around, I would recommend the VC++/MFC Members BBS on
- the Microsoft Network. MSN access is available over the Internet now
- so you only pay the annual fee instead of an hourly connect time
- charge. You can get details at http://www.microsoft.com.
-
- The VC++/MFC Members Forum is organized into topics, and the tone is
- more professional than most USENET groups -- even the postings from
- beginners. There is an occasional poster who ignores the
- "member-to-member" characteristic, posts an obnoxious message, and
- then complains that no one from Microsoft was on-line waiting for his
- question, and no one else likes his attitude enough to take time to
- solve his problem for him. On the other hand, you don't have to put
- up with people who are permanently angry that so many of us insist on
- buying a commercially successful product like VC++ and MFC instead of
- their favorite politically correct alternative...
-
- I find the trade-off is in favor of the MSN forum for most purposes.
- I try to stay current with comp.lang.c++ and the moderated version
- for the occasional significant discussion of pure language issues and
- issues of portability among platforms VC++ does not support. But I
- get more practical benefit from MSN in terms of hearing about
- problems before I trip on them, and in understanding a feature better
- by explaining its use to someone else. Microsoft has also started
- recruiting experienced outsiders to act as mentors on these forums
- (designated VP or VIP or something similar). They're just in there
- slugging like the rest of the us when it comes to the tough
- questions, but they are very helpful for beginners.
-
- The topical outline of the forum is roughly like this:
-
- Compilers and Language
- Developer Studio
- Debugger
- Projects
- Resource and Text Editors
- Installation and Configuration
- Link and Utilities
- MFC
- Database Classes
- Doc/View Architecture
- OLE Classes/Controls
- Other Classes
- UI and Controls
- Macintosh and RISC
- Member Uploads
- Microsoft Uploads
